In the continuous slab casting process, pictured to the right, molten steel flows from a ladle, through a tundish into the mold. It should be protected from exposure to air by a slag cover over each vessel and by ceramic nozzles between vessels. Once in the mold, the molten steel freezes against the water-cooled copper mold walls to form a solid shell.
